The prolific and beloved author John Grisham, known for his courtroom thrillers, is back this month with a new pageturner, A Time for Mercy,... After a shooting in London goes hideously wrong, two hitmen, Ray and Ken, are sent to hide out in the strange, Gothic, medieval town of Bruges, Belgium, by their volatile and dangerous boss, Harry Waters. A winner of the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film, McDonagh has been nominated for three other Academy Awards, and in 2018 won three BAFTA Awards from four nominations and two Golden Globe Awards from three nominations for his film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
In Bruges is an unlikely story about two Irish hitmen Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson). The machinations of the plot in In Bruges never really feel contrived, because they’re always rooted in something that we saw happen before, and that’s most apparent as the players in our story converge on this “fairy-tale town” for the climax. That comes in the very next scene: See, In Bruges is, for much of its running time, a sort of odd-couple comedy. I was shocked that McDonagh would take us to London when I came to this point in the screenplay (so late in the game, just a few pages from the end), and it does greater damage than just breaking the Unity of Place – it destroys the motif where Bruges is a sort of stand-in for purgatory. Indecent Proposal.doc. Shoot first. Ray, meanwhile, sulking at the bottom, gets into an altercation with some hefty Americans.

Because at least in prison and at least in death, you know, I wouldn't be in fuckin' Bruges.
As Ray sleeps, we get a flashback to the job that went wrong, where Ray shot a child by accident: Despite any Tarantino influence that might be inferred from his “hitmen hangout” premise, McDonagh uses flashbacks very sparingly in the script (and moreso in the film itself – two of the three major deleted scenes are flashbacks). ( Log Out / A winner of the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film, McDonagh has been nominated for three other Academy Awards, and in 2018 won three BAFTA Awards from four nominations and two Golden Globe Awards from three nominations for his film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Other than that, it's brilliant. I really really hoped I wouldn’t die. The hitmen continue to quietly sight-see in Bruges, on Ken’s insistence that they keep a low profile.
It is truly funny and truly heartbreaking, and displays all of McDonagh's skill in true form. The threads of the story have converged in a way that feels inevitable, but surprising; creative, but not contrived. Of course he won’t be getting out of Bruges – maybe it is a little like purgatory – but why? But despite Ray’s acerbic jokes and Ken’s tourist sensibilities, they’re also killers in hiding, and the screenplay doesn’t let us forget that.
The shot’s clearly been trimmed before Farrell gets the chance to say it, and that’s because a second flashback scene, present in the script, has been removed entirely.
Prison… death… didn’t matter.
This is my vote of what we should do. Reading notes: Because there is not a legally available script to refer to, this breakdown is keyed to the sequences as organized on the DVD. These closing lines are ambiguous about whether Ray survives, but they convey the really important thing, which is the final beat of his character arc: He doesn’t want to die anymore. Rather than meeting his sorrow with thoughts of a cowardly suicide, he now meets it with a plan of action, something that might bring closure and do some good in the end. It points to the fact that Harry is going to be a very big presence in the film, very soon.
The coked-up Jimmy engages in a racist rant about a war “between the blacks and the whites,” and Ken objects: In the film, Ray motions to Jimmy that Harry did, indeed, “chop his fucking head off” – but the line of dialogue is not there. Success!
It’s evocative, yet detached; workmanlike, yet kind of gross.)
